Study Design

We used a brand new Zebra 105sl Plus, 203 dpi and 300 dpi printer for the testing.  We made no mechanical adjustments to the printers or printheads.  All we did was remove 1 printhead and install the next printhead to see “out of box/drop in replacement” performance for each printhead.  We used genuine Zebra media, both direct thermal labels and thermal transfer ribbon and labels.  Then we tested with industry standard aftermarket direct thermal labels and thermal transfer ribbon and labels.  We used a Gryphon handheld scanner, model # GM4401-BK-910MHz.  We started printing at a heat setting of 10 (printer’s heat setting range is 0-30) and increased by 2 until we got to a heat setting of 20.  We set the print speed to 2 IPS and increased by 2 IPS until we got to 12 IPS. We used these settings because we found it gave us the most acceptable print quality results in all printheads. The SSI printhead prints a scan able barcode in both ladder and picket orientation nearly every time the OEM does.  The SSI printhead prints a scan able barcode in both ladder and picket orientation more times than Competitor 1 and 2.  The overall print quality/legibility of the SSI printhead is near identical to the OEM in all print samples. The SSI printhead is the most consistent in scan able barcodes and print quality when comparing to the OEM printhead.
